Sentence
writing skills are the hardest and do you know how and why and how to avoid
sentence errors?
Please
read this article carefully; by doing such you will be able to learn the best
writing skills and you will also learn how to avoid sentence errors.
Many
people think that just putting a pen to write a sentence of 3 components +
Subject + Verb + Object is finished, that's fine.
Do
you believe that many students (even teachers) are still not aware of the
sentence-writing errors mentioned below?
This
is a small exercise that corrects the sentence structure and requires students
in Academic English classes to do it in about 10 minutes.
Sentences
In This Lesson Include:
1.
Stringy Sentence,
2.
Comma Splice,
3.
Run On,
4.
Choppy Sentence,
5.
Sentence Fragment,
6.
Parallel Structure.
If
you read this paragraph, don't recognize sentence problems, not to mention
needing to fix them, chances are you will make the same mistake when writing.
The
sentence structure and sentence problems are also tested on the SAT (Writing
& Language section).
The
picture above is a correction of sentence by Shafiq Ahmadi (8th grade
math student, Archimedes) who is attending the Academic English class, which is
taught every Saturday morning.
Reconcile
the corrected lesson with Ahmadi's revision to understand your
explanation.
The
master will not explain the concept of sentence problems (sentence fragment,
choppy sentence, comma splice, run - on, stringy sentence) here. Class lectures
are easy to understand, convenient, and must be placed in a series of lectures
to be easily understood. Writing on this article is lengthy, he does not have
much time.
He
pointed out the problem and reinterpreted Ahmadi's correction to make it
easier to understand. You should look at the unmodified paragraph for easy
comparison.
1. Sentence 1 in the unpublished
article has 4 independent clauses - stringy sentence.
Ahmadi's edit: separated into 2 compound
sentences, structured:
S + V + O, and S + V +
O. Therefore, S + V + O, but S + V + O.
2. Question 2 in the post has not
corrected the comma splice error: S + V + O, S + V + O.
Based on the meanings
of the 2 sentences in the sentence, Ahmadi converts it into a compound sentence:
S + V + O; S + V + O.
3. Sentences 3, 4, 5, and 6 in the
sentence have not corrected choppy sentences (writing too many simple
sentences).
Shafiq Ahmadi combines 4 simple sentences into 1
compound complex sentence.
Structure:
S + V + O; instead, S
+ V + O, adjective clause 1, adjective clause 2.
Instead
is a conjunctive adverb connect between two independent clauses to form a
compound sentence. In addition, in the sentence there are 2 adjective clauses,
adjective clause 1 modifies (modify) the noun "the term salad bowl",
adjective clause 2 explains (modify) the noun "American society".
4. Question 7 comma splice fault.
Based on the meaning
relation in the sentence, Ahmadi changes it into a compound sentence
Structure of Ahmadi's
sentence:
S + V + O
[subordinator S + V + O]; S + V + O [subordinator S + V + O].
Compound sentences,
with 2 independent clause connected by semi-colon, 2 noun clause act as object
of 2 verbs "implies".
5. Question 8 has a parallel structure
error, correlative conjunction "not only ... but also ..." must use a
parallel structure.
Specifically in the
unpublished post: not only must to survive but also for success is wrong, fix
to: not only to survive but also to succeed.
6. Question 10 has a sentence fragment
(incomplete sentence). Ahmadi corrected by combining with sentence 9,
forming a complex sentence (complex sentence). Sentence structure is corrected:
S + V + O + adverb
clause + adjective clause.
Complex sentences, 1
independent clause, 2 subordinate clause (adverb clause and adjective clause).
7. Question 11 has a sentence fragment
error. Based on context, Ahmadi combines verses 11 and 12 into one
sentence. However, in the sentence I correct, although it is true in terms of
structure, the meaning is a bit forced. Specifically, I use the preposition
"like", which implies comparison of similar points. However,
Chinatown cannot be compared to LA. Ideally, you should put the for example,
Chinatown in San Francisco and New York into sentences 9 and 10.
Now
many immigrant groups do not feel the same need because there are many places
in America where you work, shop, get medical care, marry, divorce and die
without knowing English, for example Chinatown in San Francisco and New York.
8. Verse 12, verse 13 is not wrong.
However, it would be better if verse 12 is: Also, Los Angeles has many Vietnamese
and Mexican immigrants.
9. Question 14 has a parallel structure
error. Specifically, in the unmodified sentence: learn both English and study
the Spanish language is wrong.
Shafiq Ahmadi edit: learn both English and Spanish
language ... (can remove the word language).
10. Question 15, 16 encountered a choppy
sentence. Shafiq Ahmadi combine 2 simple sentences to form a complex
sentence. Structure:
S + V + O + adjective
clause.
The adjective clause
"where they are in the majority" adapts to the phrase many communities
in verse 15.
It
is praiseworthy that Ahmadi knows how to use restrictive adjective
clause in this sentence, instead of non-restrictive clause. Many teachers
cannot distinguish these two types of adjective clauses.
And
you, please rate yourself. Read a paragraph, do not analyze the sentence
structure, do not recognize errors, do not know how to correct, can write an
essay?
